WHAT THEY DON’T TEACH YOU ABOUT TAXES PRICING AND PAYING YOURSELF

When I started my business, I did the best I could with the knowledge and resources I had.

I had the vision. I had the branding. I had the mission statement.  I even knew how to  create my own monthly budgets and profit/loss statements thanks to my background in finance.  But I’ll be honest. When it came to taxes and pricing strategy, I was winging it.

And no one told me how costly that could be.

The Part of Business No One Prepares You For

You can take all the business webinars in the world, but most of them skip over the most critical part of staying in business:

💸 Understanding how to manage your money.

Here’s what I had to learn, sometimes the hard way:

  • You need to price for profit, not just what feels “affordable.”

I was charging just enough to get a yes, not enough to sustain myself.
  • You have to account for taxes, even if you are not making six figures yet.

I learned this one when I got hit with a surprise tax bill. Fun times.
  • You are allowed to pay yourself. Actually, you are supposed to.

For a long time, I paid everyone else first. The platforms, the subscriptions, the space, the team. By the time I looked at myself, there was nothing left.

Shifting From Confusion to Confidence

I know I am not alone in this. So many of the entrepreneurs I meet, especially creatives and women of color, feel like they are doing something wrong when money feels tight.

But here is what I want you to hear:

Struggling with financial clarity does not make you less smart, less capable, or less serious.

It just means no one taught you yet. That is all.

That realization changed everything for me. It shifted my mindset from self blame to self responsibility. And once I stopped treating money as something I was bad at, I could finally start learning how to work with it.

That is why I am so passionate about this work.

Because you do not need to guess your way through pricing.

You do not need to dread tax season.

You do not need to treat your paycheck like a leftover.

What I Teach Now (Because I Wish Someone Had Taught Me Then)

When I created my coaching programs for business and finances, I made sure they included the real life guidance I wish someone had sat down and told me when I first started.

We walk through:

  • Setting aside money for taxes without panic
  • Creating a rhythm for paying yourself consistently
  • Making peace with numbers, even if math was never your thing

This is not about becoming an accountant.

It is about being a business owner who knows how to stay in the game and thrive.

If this conversation resonated with you, I’m building something deeper.
