Who’s Running for President in 2020? Part 3

So far there are 21 Democratic candidates and Donald Trump and Bill Weld conclude the Republican candidates running for the 2020 presidential election.  Senator Joe Biden, Democrat, recently announced his candidacy on April 25, 2019. Biden is a well-known political figure and most Americans would remember him as the former Vice President of Barack Obama.  But there’s a lot more to his story that I didn’t know of until learning more about him recently…

Joe Biden was born in Scranton, PA on November 20, 1942.  He was raised in Delaware, and received his B.A. from the University of Delaware.  He went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University Law School. Biden has run for president twice before, and his political career began in 1972.

Biden won election to Senate at age 29, in 1972.  His victory was followed by tragedy only a few weeks later.  His first wife and daughter Naomi were killed in an auto accident while out Christmas shopping.  Two of his children survived the accident but were critically injured. Biden was at his son Beau’s hospital bedside when he was sworn into office.  He raised his two sons as a single parent for awhile and eventually remarried. Biden has been re-elected into Senate 6 times throughout his career. He served as Chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee for 16 years and as Chairman of State Foreign Relations Committee for 12 years.

Joe’s landmark legislation was the writing of the Violence Against Women Act, which criminalizes violent acts against women and creates resources for survivors of assault.  He believes the middle class is the backbone of our country and his vision is to implement ways to rebuild the middle class economy. His outlook on healthcare/health insurance is that it is a right, not a privilege, and wants to build upon the Affordable Care Act.  Tackling climate change and pollution is also on his agenda. He is an advocate for criminal justice reform and also plans to pursue a humane immigration policy that upholds values, strengthens the economy, and secures the border. Joe also supports marriage equality.

Biden suffered another tragic loss when his son Beau, died of brain cancer at age 46.  His life’s mission became ending cancer as we know it. He launched the Biden Foundation February 2017 which focuses on foreign policy,  Biden’s cancer initiative, community colleges and military families, protecting children, equality, ending violence against women, and strengthening the middle class.

The elections are less than a couple years away, but it’s a smart choice to start learning as much as we can about our country’s political landscape so we can cast our most educated votes on election day!  The beautiful thing about our democracy is that we can all plan for politics. Life is all about trying to make the right decisions and choices, and that’s especially key in terms of American government.

I hope this post was insightful!
